Doncaster Children’s Services Trust took a walk on the wild side as it celebrated the successes and personal achievements gained over the past year by young people growing up in care and care leavers.
Nearly 200 young people received certificates at the annual Celebrating Success Awards, held jointly by the Trust and Doncaster Council.
The young people were awarded in categories which marked achievements such as making a difference, education, sport, music, creativity and the arts, university summer school and personal achievement. The awards showed examples of courage, determination and kindness towards supporting other young people growing up in care.
The awards are designed to encourage and inspire young people who are growing up in care and to celebrate the achievements of those who left care.
This year’s winners ranged from those who had achieved well at school, participated and held fund raising activities, represented the country in national sports events, and shown commitment and dedication to inspire others.
Guest presenters included Councillor, Nuala Fennelly, Kelly Self from the University of Sheffield and Simon Carr from Doncaster Little Theatre.
Doncaster Little Theatre worked collaboratively with the Trust donating a supply of decorations towards the event transforming the location into a safari sensation. The event also included volunteers from Doncaster College who provided ‘media make up’ students for face-painting.
A special award category was included this year called the voice champion award, this was awarded to a group of Chief Executive Young Advisors who recently visited Romania to work with the charity Vis de Copil (A Child’s Dream). The Young Advisors took their Advocacy and Participation work internationally by supporting the children and young people who are homeless to make sure their voices were heard and listened too.
Commenting on all the awards, Director of Performance and Improvement at the Trust, James Thomas said: “Our children and young people achieve some amazing things and to hear about their individual successes is really heartening. We are all incredible proud of each and every individual for their accomplishments.
“I would also like to thank my Young Advisors who have done a fantastic job at creating a memorable event and presenting on the night. I am sure they are an inspiration to everyone."
Councillor, Nuala Fennelly commented: “It was a pleasure to attend such an inspirational event, celebrating the achievements of our young people.”
Each young person received a voucher and a book as well as a personalised certificate.
